"The uncontaminated is [obtained] only by ... should be reflected upon according to principle": this explains the third line. The uncontaminated is obtained only through separation from defilement; that is, an ārya, by separating from the defilement of a lower level, obtains the uncontaminated [state] of an upper level. This also applies only to fundamental dhyāna. One who is completely devoid of possession newly obtains it at this time; if one has already achieved it previously, one also obtains it at other times. That is, at the stage of the knowledge of exhaustion (kṣaya-jñāna), one further obtains the path of the non-trainee (aśaikṣa-mārga); at the time of refining the faculties, one further obtains the path of the trainee and non-trainee; or, through effort, one cultivates and obtains the superior uncontaminated dharmas of that level; or, because there is fallback, one obtains the uncontaminated dharmas of that level: all should be reflected upon according to principle. All such dharmas are not cases of being previously unachieved and now newly obtained; therefore they are not mentioned. Because here it is explained with respect to the fundamental level: only when one was previously completely without possession and now newly achieves it is it called "acquisition"; having previously achieved a minor portion, even though one now obtains further, none of these are called "acquisition".
