"These eight preliminary stages […] possess all three" explains "pure" and the subsequent line. These eight preliminary stages are all subsumed under pure concentrations. Only the first preliminary stage also extends to being uncontaminated, because one who is not yet free from desire gives rise to the noble path relying on the preliminary stage. Therefore the Nyāyānusāra says: "The upper seven preliminary stages lack uncontaminated [states] because they do not feel revulsion toward or turn away from the dharmas of their own stage. Only the first preliminary stage extends to being uncontaminated because it is capable of feeling revulsion toward and turning away from the dharmas of its own stage, as this stage is extremely proximate to the realm of many calamities and disasters." (End of śāstra citation.) All [preliminary stages] lack tasting because they are paths of detachment and arise with difficulty; thus greed-attachment does not arise, for that tasting concentration arises not from a path of detachment, but from a relaxed path. Although there is also a path within the preliminary stage, it is not the actual detachment from desire; because it assists detachment from desire, is of the category of detachment from desire, and is not a relaxed [path], greed-attachment does not arise. Although in the preliminary mind there is defilement at the moment of taking rebirth (pratisaṃdhi), because it is associated with equanimity at rebirth and death, one necessarily arouses the preliminary stage to block the defilement of concentration; therefore this is stated. The preliminary stage lacks tasting, which exists only in the fundamental [concentrations]. Some say: The threshold concentration also has association with tasting, because prior to arousing the fundamental [concentration], one is also greedy for this [threshold] concentration. Due to this, the threshold [concentration] possesses all three kinds. Because the upper seven preliminary stages have already attained the lower fundamental [concentrations], greed-attachment does not arise toward those preliminary stages; therefore they are not said to have [tasting]. This narrates an alternative view.
