"The treatise says […] there is none like this" explains the first line. The fundamental of the first dhyāna and the preliminary stage of the first dhyāna are associated with coarse examination (vitarka) and subtle investigation (vicāra). In the upper seven concentrations, the fundamentals and preliminary stages all lack coarse examination and subtle investigation. Only the intermediate dhyāna has subtle investigation without coarse examination; thus it differs from the preliminary stages. Because it lacks coarse examination, it is superior to the first dhyāna; because it has subtle investigation, it does not reach the second [dhyāna]. Relying on this meaning, the name 'intermediate' is established. Due to this, the higher stages lack intermediate dhyānas; within a single stage, ascending and descending has no case like this.
