"The true meaning is: like a four-factored army": the author of the treatise sets forth the Sautrāntika position. As for the true meaning: elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry are called a four-factored army. The individual components are the factors; the totality is the army. Gathering the individual parts to form a whole, the army is nominal. One should know that the five factors of dhyāna are also like this: individually they are the factors, while dhyāna is the totality. Forming a whole out of the individual parts, dhyāna is nominal.
