"In the first two dhyānas... and four factors" is the answer of the Sarvāstivāda. Although in the first dhyāna there is pleasure associated with three consciousnesses, when one is actually in concentration, there is no pleasure faculty (sukhindriya). It is not that the first and second dhyānas have physical bodily pleasure, because while actually in concentration there are no five [sensory] consciousnesses; nor is there mental pleasure, because joy (prīti) is stated to exist. Joy is joyful sensation (saumanasya); two sensations, joy and pleasure, cannot run concurrently in a single mind, so there is no pleasant sensation. Nor can joyful and pleasant sensations present themselves alternately, because the first dhyāna is said to possess five factors and the second dhyāna is said to possess four factors.
