"As a verse says... therefore it must definitely be so": the author of the treatise replies. As a sūtra verse says, "The Buddhas of the three times extinguish the grief of sentient beings"; hence it is in terms of continuity that a Buddha is said to know everything. Your school allows only the skandhas to exist in the three times, not the pudgala, since the pudgala is subsumed under the fifth, ineffable repository of dharmas; therefore, it must definitely be so. That is, it must definitely be said that this is spoken in terms of dharmas of the three times, admitting that it is spoken in terms of continuity. The Buddhas of the three times know everything in terms of the continuity of cognition, not as a pudgala. If the pudgala were the substance of the World-Honoured One who knows everything, the Buddha should not be said to exist in the three times.
