29.18

「理實應用二法為體」者，論主意解。此捨無量能治貪、瞋，理實應用無貪、無瞋二法為體。問：若捨無量二法為體，如何頌文不言無瞋？解云：理實此捨二法為體，頌言無貪且從強說，或頌無貪是前師義。

"In reality it should take two dharmas as its essence" is the śāstra-master's intended interpretation. Since this immeasurable of equanimity can counteract both greed and ill will, in reality it should take the two dharmas of non-greed and non-ill will as its essence. Question: If the immeasurable of equanimity has two dharmas as its essence, why does the verse text not mention non-ill will? An explanation says: In reality, this equanimity has two dharmas as its essence; the verse says non-greed merely following the predominant factor, or the verse's statement of non-greed is the position of the earlier masters.
