"Because they wish for them [...] to counteract ill will and the like" is the reply. Although [the beings] have not actually obtained it yet, because one aspires to make them obtain happiness and the like, this is not a distortion (viparyāsa). *Āśaya* here means 'intention' (意樂). Although [happiness] has not actually been attained, because it is a wholesome intention, there is no distortion; although not actually attained, because it arises in association with ideation of resolute intention (adhimokṣa-saṃjñā), and does not grasp at reality, it is therefore not a distortion. Even if it were a distortion, what fault would there be? Suppressing the outsiders' imputed error: If it is said that being a distortion, it should not be wholesome, the reasoning is not so, because this arises in association with wholesome roots. If it is said that being a distortion, it should lead to evil, the reasoning is also not so, because through this power it can counteract ill will and the like.
