"Among the ten, the first eight... visible matter of the desire [realm]": this explains the second line. In reality, they take the visible matter āyatana as object, while mentally imputing earth, etc. Therefore the Nyāyānusāra says: "How can earth and the rest also be called the visible matter āyatana? Because there is a distinction between earth and the earth element, etc. Visible color and shape are called earth, etc., as has been explained previously. When speaking of the totalities of earth, etc., it does not say the earth element, etc.; therefore the first eight take only the visible matter āyatana as object. Since wind and the wind element have no difference, how can it be said that it also takes the visible matter āyatana as object? This objection is unreasonable, because ordinary people also speak of black wind, whirling wind, etc. From this, the principle that the first eight cognize visible matter is established (above is the treatise text)."
