"At the initial stage of apparitional birth ... initially eight faculties are acquired": apparitional birth also includes intermediate existence (antarābhava). To distinguish it from the other three forms of birth, it says "apparitional birth." "Initial stage" refers to the initial stage of taking birth in intermediate existence or rebirth existence (upapattibhava). Apparitionally born beings with two sexes exist only in the initial moment of rebirth existence and do not apply to intermediate existence, because the body of an intermediate existence is definitively either female or male. Thus the treatise below states: "There is definitely no intermediate existence that is neither male nor female, because the body in intermediate existence is definitely endowed with the faculties." The rest of the text is understandable. One should know that here, the initial acquisition of maturation faculties in the four forms of birth universally refers to the initial moment of the two existences, intermediate and rebirth. The essence of the maturation faculties being present, their being newly achieved in that moment is called "acquisition" (prāpti), not that one must have previously not possessed them to call it acquisition. This differs slightly from the earlier explanation of the meaning of acquisition. The seven physical faculties and the vitality faculty are acquired as appropriate at the initial stage of taking birth in intermediate or rebirth existence. Although the mental faculty, the five feelings, and the five faculties of faith and the rest are also acquired at the initial stage of birth in intermediate or rebirth existence, because they are not maturation, they are not called "acquisition." Therefore, the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 147, states: "Question: The remaining non-physical faculties are also acquired at that time, namely the mind, the five feelings, and the five faculties of faith and the rest; why are they not mentioned here? Answer: What should be mentioned here but is not mentioned, one should know that there is something omitted. Some say: Whatever is acquired by all at that time is mentioned here; the remaining non-physical faculties, though acquired by some, are not acquired by all, and therefore are not mentioned. That is, when dying from a higher stage and taking birth in a lower stage, although one acquires those faculties, if dying from one's own stage and being reborn into one's own stage, none of them are acquired, and therefore they are not mentioned. Some say: Here it only asks about what is initially acquired from karma; at the initial stage of taking birth, the remaining non-physical faculties, though acquired, are not karma-born, so they are not mentioned here. What is acquired at later stages, though karma-born, is not initially acquired, so it is also not mentioned (thus far the text of the treatise)."
