"That arhat [...] just like casting off a host of illnesses": the answer. That arhat observes for himself that his remaining in the world would bring little benefit and ease to others, and furthermore sees that there are people to uphold the noble teachings, or his own body is oppressed by the suffering of illness and the like. "Illness and the like" includes four other factors such as engaging in business. Therefore, the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 60, says: "Furthermore, a sūtra says: Due to five conditions, an arhat liberated by occasion falls away, declines, and forgets. What are the five? First, engaging in much worldly business; second, delighting in conceptual proliferation; third, being fond of reconciling disputes; fourth, being pleased to undertake long journeys; fifth, the body being constantly afflicted with much illness." The intention of quoting this verse is to clarify the arhat's discarding of life. "Holy life" refers to upholding the precepts. "Noble path" refers to the uncontaminated noble path.
