30.5

「荷重擔至曾未見故」者，犢子部答。不應重擔五取蘊體即名能荷。所以者何？謂曾未見於此重擔即名能荷，故知有我名為能荷。蘊是所取捨二種，略而不論。

"Bearing the heavy burden... for it has never been seen": the Vātsīputrīyas reply. The substance of the heavy burden—the five appropriation-aggregates—should not itself be called the bearer. Why is this? Because it has never been seen that this heavy burden is itself called the bearer; therefore we know there is a self termed the bearer. The skandhas are what are taken up and laid down—these two are omitted here for brevity.
