"What kind of remorse is called good?" introduces the question. "It means [remorse arises] with respect to the good and the bad [...] it arises with respect to the two conditions" is the answer. That is to say, when the mind repents of not having done good and having done evil, it is called good remorse. If it is contrary to this good remorse, it is called unwholesome remorse; that is, when the mind repents of having done good and not having done evil. These two kinds of remorse, wholesome and unwholesome, each arise based on the two conditions of good and evil. Hence the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle thirty-seven, states: "Here, remorse has four propositions in total: 1. Remorse that is wholesome, arising with respect to what is unwholesome. 2. Remorse that is unwholesome, arising with respect to what is wholesome. 3. Remorse that is wholesome, arising with respect to what is wholesome. 4. Remorse that is unwholesome, arising with respect to what is unwholesome."
