Regarding 'Namely name and form... capacity to produce a fruit': the Sautrāntika answers. Regarding 'name and form', 'name' refers to the four skandhas, and 'form' refers to the rūpa-skandha. In their school, seeds perfume name and form; that is, within name and form there is the capacity to produce their own fruit. Any uninterrupted continuity of seeds is called 'gradual transmission'. When on the verge of producing its own fruit, it is called 'proximity'—proximity to the fruit. Grasping the fruit without interruption is called 'capacity'—the active exercise of capacity. All three of these are alternative names for 'seed'. This gradual transmission is uninterrupted because of the continuity of seeds. This proximity is close to the fruit because of the transformation of the seed. This capacity is the active exercise of capacity because of the differentiation of the seed. These three are also alternative names for 'seed'. In that order they explain the above three. Another explanation: this fruit arises through the continuity, transformation, and differentiation of seeds. What is the second, 'transformation'? When among the continuous seeds they are about to produce a fruit, the seed transforms, the subsequent becoming different from the prior. Just as when a seed is about to produce a sprout, its substance transforms. What is the first, 'continuity'? Because this seed looks forward as cause and backward as fruit, it can encompass all conditioned dharmas of the three times, and is collectively called 'continuity'. In this text, why was gradual transmission explained first and continuity second? Because gradual transmission is clarified in terms of continuity. Another explanation: it was explained as the context demanded; why debate the sequence? What is the third, 'differentiation'? It refers to the seed's capacity to produce a fruit without interruption; this subsequent moment's seed differs from the prior seed, hence it is called 'differentiation'. In the Sautrāntika, cause and fruit differ sequentially, hence it speaks of the capacity to produce a fruit without interruption. Another explanation: gradual transmission capacity and proximate capacity refer to the continuity of transformation and the continuity of differentiation; by this, the continuity of transformation is the gradual transmission capacity, and the continuity of differentiation is the proximate capacity.
