"Veiled-indeterminate [up to] prior and posterior acquisition of the phenomenon" is the explanation. It explains the third line [of the verse]. This means that only the defilements abandoned by cultivation in the first dhyāna of the form realm generate veiled-indeterminate bodily and vocal informative matter, whose acquisition is also, as before, only simultaneous. Although there are afflictions of superior grade, they cannot generate uninformative matter; hence their power is weak, and because of this they definitely lack acquisition prior to or posterior to the phenomenon. Or, although there are superior informative karmas, it should be known that all four aggregates that are veiled-indeterminate have acquisitions of the three periods of time; in comparison with matter, mind is strong and is the generator, so it has acquisitions of the three periods of time. In comparison with mind, matter is weak and is that which is generated, so its [acquisition] is only simultaneous with the phenomenon. As for why this matter exists only in the first dhyāna: the two views in the desire realm, the view of individuality and extreme views, which are veiled-indeterminate, cannot generate karma; from the second dhyāna upward, not being accompanied by vitarka and vicāra, they also do not generate karma.
