On "Staying is what sentient beings... four conditioned characteristics": this answers. To cause revulsion toward staying, it is spoken of together with decaying, just as pointing out Kālakarnī together with Śrī: to cause revulsion toward Śrī, one first points out Kālakarnī. Kālakarnī and Śrī are two sisters who constantly accompany one another. The elder sister is named Śrī; wherever she arrives, she can bring benefit. The younger sister is Kālakarnī; because her ears are black, she is named accordingly; wherever she arrives, she can bring decline and ruin. Foolish people crave and are attached to Śrī; a wise person wishing to cause them to abandon her in disgust first shows Kālakarnī. Having seen Kālakarnī, they also abandon Śrī. The old renderings as "Goddess of Merit" and "Dark Woman" were translator errors. Staying and decaying are just like this: to cause revulsion toward staying, it is spoken of together with decaying; therefore, there are definitively four conditioned characteristics.
