Regarding "The commentary says ... by four secondary characteristics": in the prose portion, the root verses are first explained, and then there is extensive resolution [of doctrines]. In explaining the root verses, this explains the first line. These four primary characteristics are called conditioned because they have secondary characteristics that serve as their designating marks. Here it is specifically explained that the primary characteristics are conditioned by virtue of the four secondary characteristics; that conditioned formations are conditioned by virtue of the four primary characteristics is stated by extension. Although the primary characteristics are also [conditioned] by virtue of primary characteristics, here they are discussed provisionally in contrast to the secondary characteristics. One should know that the four major and four minor characteristics each have three names. The three names of the major characteristics are: first, they are called "primary characteristics" in contrast to secondary characteristics, or because they are characteristics on the primary dharma, they are called primary characteristics; second, they are called "major characteristics" in contrast to the minor characteristics, or because they characterize eight dharmas, they are called major characteristics; third, they are simply named "origination," etc., in contrast to "origination-origination," etc. The three names of the minor characteristics are: first, they are called "secondary characteristics" because they follow along with the primary characteristics, or because they characterize by following the primary; second, they are called "minor characteristics" in comparison to the major characteristics, or because they characterize only one dharma, they are called minor characteristics; third, they are called "origination-origination," etc., in contrast to "origination," etc. The upper word "origination" is the minor origination, and the lower word "origination" is the major origination, because it can originate origination. Another interpretation: the upper word "origination" is the major origination, and the lower word "origination" is the minor origination; because it is the origination of origination, it is called "origination-origination." As with this explanation of origination-origination, the other three are also like this.
