Regarding "The Sautrāntika masters say ... proving that their substantial entity really exists": this below is an extensive resolution. Here the Sautrāntika refutes [them] based on the three means of valid cognition (pramāṇa). The Sautrāntika masters say that the four characteristics such as origination inherently have no real entity; making distinctions now is like dissecting empty space. "Form, etc." includes the remaining four sense fields and the five sense faculties, etc. That is, these characteristics are not proven to be real by perception (pratyakṣa) like the five sense fields; they are not proven to be real by inference (anumāna) like the five sense faculties; nor are they proven to have a real entity by authoritative scripture (āgama). The utmost supreme teaching is called authoritative scripture; it is also called the means of valid cognition through holy scripture (śabdāgama-pramāṇa). Since all three means of valid cognition are absent, how can one know they exist?
