Regarding "Although other schools say ... it does not accord with correct reasoning": Here the Sautrāntika refutes the characteristic of cessation of the Saṃmatīya school. The Saṃmatīya maintains: Firewood and so forth abide for a long time, and when firewood and so forth cease, they cease through two conditions: first, an internal characteristic of cessation; second, external fire and so forth. Stationariness and cessation occur at different times; but regarding mind, mental factors, and the like, they cease solely through the internal characteristic of cessation, not through external conditions. Therefore, it is now refuted: Although other [schools, such as the] Saṃmatīya, say that only when firewood and so forth encounter external fire and so forth as destructive causes and conditions can the internal characteristic of cessation destroy the firewood and so forth to be destroyed, what they say is like saying: When taking a laxative, a deva comes and causes the purging! The destructive causes and conditions, such as fire, should themselves destroy the firewood and so forth to be destroyed; why must one separately grasp at the existence of a characteristic of cessation? Furthermore, if phenomena such as firewood depend on external conditions to cease, your school could say that prior stationariness and subsequent cessation are two that are not simultaneous. But mind and mental factors, according to your school, are admitted to perish in a single moment, without needing to depend on other external conditions of cessation; at the time of the operation of stationariness they should initiate the operation of cessation. How can they hold that the operations initiated by the characteristics occur at different times, one after another? If at the time of the characteristic of stationariness they also initiate the operation of cessation, then a single phenomenon at one time would both abide and cease, which does not accord with correct reasoning.
