「此若必然至超越定義」者，大眾部等難。若如文執者，經言九次第，即不令在第四。經言次第，應無超越義。經言次第亦通超越，何妨經言第九定而通第四入？

Regarding "If this were necessarily so... the meaning of jumping absorption": the Mahāsāṃghikas and others object: If one insists upon the literal text, the sūtra speaking of nine successive stages would not allow it to be in the fourth. If the sūtra speaks of successive stages, there should be no meaning of jumping [stages]. [Yet] the sūtra's statement of successive stages also accommodates jumping; what prevents the sūtra from calling it the ninth absorption while also allowing entry from the fourth?
