Regarding "If it brings about the mind āyatana... it should be known that it is likewise": if it brings about the mind āyatana, it definitively brings about two āyatanas, namely the mind and the mental-object [āyatana]; 'mental-object' refers to the mental factors operating concurrently with the mind āyatana, as well as dharmas such as arising, while the remaining nine are indefinite. If the four sense faculties beginning with the eye are in the desire realm, when not yet acquired or already lost, they are not possessed; if born in the form realm, there are no odors or tastes; if born in the formless realm, the remaining nine are entirely absent. Although these nine sometimes coexist with the mind, they may be brought about by different karmas; hence, bringing about the mind āyatana does not definitively bring about them. If it brings about the tangible āyatana, it definitively brings about the tangible āyatana and the mental-object āyatana (namely arising and so forth), while the remaining nine are indefinite. If the four sense faculties beginning with the eye are in the desire realm, when not yet acquired or already lost, they are not possessed; the mind āyatana, if one enters the mindless [state], is nonexistent; odors and tastes do not exist in the higher realms. Although these nine sometimes coexist with tangibles, they may be brought about by different karmas. Therefore, although when bringing about tangibles the body and visible forms are definitively coexistent, they may be brought about by different karmas; hence, bringing about the tangible āyatana cannot definitively bring about those nine āyatanas.
