"Just as for mind and mental factors, up to: 'there is definitely none'": this is the answer. Just as for mind and mental factors, besides [those] causes excluded, and also excluding the associated cause (saṃprayuktaka-hetu), one should know that the remaining matter and non-associated formation dharmas are produced by four, three, or two remaining causes. Here, defiled matter and non-associated formation dharmas, like mind and mental factors, excluding the maturation cause and also excluding the associated cause, are produced by the remaining four causes. If they are matter and non-associated formations born of maturation, like mind and mental factors, excluding the omnipresent cause and also excluding the associated cause, they are produced by the remaining four causes. The third [group of] remaining matter and non-associated formations, like mind and mental factors, excluding both the maturation and omnipresent causes, and also excluding the associated cause, are produced by the remaining three causes. Initial undefiled matter and non-associated formations, like mind and mental factors, excluding the three causes—maturation, omnipresent, and homogeneous—and also excluding the associated cause, are produced by the remaining two causes. A dharma produced by only one cause definitely does not exist.
