Regarding 'One of the formless realm [...] namely, at the time of entering contemplation': the wholesome mind of the desire realm produces only one defiled mind of the formless realm; it does not produce wholesome [minds] of that realm, because it is extremely distant. Because the formless [realm] has four kinds of distance with respect to desire, the wholesome mind of the desire realm cannot produce wholesome minds of that realm. Therefore, Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 36, says: 'Distance of basis means that in the states of entering and emerging from meditative attainments, it is impossible for the immediately antecedent condition to serve as the substance of the basis. Distance of mental aspect means that a formless-realm mind is utterly incapable of producing mental aspects such as suffering, coarseness, and so on with respect to the phenomena of the desire realm. The meaning of distance of objective support should be understood as analogous to this, because a formless-realm mind can only take the contaminated phenomena of the lower fourth dhyāna as objective supports with the mental aspects of suffering, coarseness, and so on. Distance of antidote means that when one has not yet become detached from greed for the desire realm, it is definitely impossible to give rise to a formless attainment. Because [an antidote] must serve as both the antidote of revulsion and the antidote of abandoning with respect to bad morality and other such phenomena of the desire realm, it is not the case that without being able to take them as an objective support one could feel revulsion toward them.' The explanation is: Formless [concentration] in relation to desire lacks the antidotes of abandoning and revulsion; hence it is said to have distance of antidote. However, it can possess the antidote of retention, which can maintain its acquisition so that it is not lost. It also has the antidote of distant remove, which guards from afar against those afflictions so that they cannot arise. It also lacks the antidote of relinquishment, because it cannot relinquish the phenomena of the desire realm. If judged in terms of the minds at the end of life and linking rebirth, a desire-realm mind may also serve as a basis for a formless-realm mind.
