Regarding "What has been stated [...] that is, excluding the previous characteristics": this clarifies the four alternatives concerning the relative breadth and narrowness between the seven stations of consciousness and the four stations of consciousness. The substance of the seven stations of consciousness is broad while their locations are narrow; the locations of the four stations of consciousness are broad while their substance is narrow. The four alternatives can be known from the text. In the third alternative, since it says "the four skandhas among the seven," and the Nyāyānusāra also says that the four stations of consciousness belong only to sentient beings, it is clear that the seven stations of consciousness also belong only to sentient beings. If one compares the nine abodes of sentient beings with the four stations of consciousness in terms of their relative breadth and narrowness, they also form four alternatives: The first alternative has nine and not four: namely, consciousness within the nine. The second alternative has four and not nine: namely, the form, feeling, perception, and formations of the three miserable destinies and of the remaining heavens in the fourth dhyāna not subsumed under the heaven of non-conception. The third alternative has both nine and four: namely, the four skandhas within the nine. The fourth alternative has neither nine nor four: namely, excluding the previous characteristics.
