Regarding the passage: "If so, then the sūtra verse... there is nowhere to halt": Those who deny the intermediate state again cite a sūtra to object. This verse was spoken by the Buddha for a brāhmaṇa. Because he was studying non-Buddhist teachings, the Buddha saw that he was advanced in years and spoke the verse to reproach him. A brāhmaṇa is called "twice-born" (dvija): the initial birth is one birth, and later receiving the brāhmaṇa laws is again one birth; therefore, having received the laws, he is called "twice-born." Just as a bhikṣu is also called twice-born, referring to initial birth and receiving the precepts; or just as an egg-born being is also called twice-born, referring to womb-birth and egg-hatching. Outside the womb there are five stages: first, infant; second, young child; third, youth; fourth, prime of life; and fifth, old age. The Buddha said to him: "Twice-born! Among the five stages, you have now passed the four flourishing stages and reached the stage of decline and old age, drawing near to King Yama." The old rendering "Yanluo" is corrupt. Yama here means "quelling." It means that when wrongdoers do not recognize their own offenses and cannot endure suffering, they resist the hell-wardens and commit further transgressions. Due to the king's admonition and instruction, they come to understand their own offenses and accept them willingly. The pacification of dispute and cessation of offense are both brought about by the king, hence the name "pacifying disputes." You now desire to proceed along the path to the good destinies ahead, but you have no provisions of giving, morality, or mental cultivation; going to be born in hell, you seek to abide in the intermediate state, yet there is nowhere to halt. If there were an intermediate state, why did the World-Honoured One say there is nowhere to halt in between? By this, one clearly knows there is no intermediate state.
