"Some say wholesome and defiled [...] the nature is not the intermediate state": the reply. Destinies are strictly indeterminate and do not extend to the wholesome or defiled; this corresponds to the position of the evaluators in the Mahāvibhāṣā. If it were otherwise, saying that they extend to the wholesome and defiled, the destinies would be mutually confused, because within a single destiny the karma and defilements of all five destinies are fully accomplished. The five destinies are subsumed strictly under the category of sentient beings and do not extend to the external vessel, because this external vessel is also capable of being shared and used by the five destinies; [otherwise] it would also result in confusion, and therefore is not the essential nature of a destiny. The essential nature of the five destinies is not the intermediate state: a destiny is that which is gone to, whereas the intermediate state is not a destiny that is gone to, but an expedient means toward a destiny; therefore it is not subsumed under a destiny.
