「謂於前際至云何我曾有」者，答。此顯前際生疑。我於過去為曾有非有者，此是第一疑我有、無。無即絕言。若執有者，何等我曾有？為是即蘊？為是離蘊？為色是我？受、想等耶？此是第二疑我自性。若於中隨執一種是我，云何我曾有？為常、無常？為男、女等？此是第三疑我差別。

[On] "That is, regarding the past [...] up to: how did I exist?": This is the answer. This reveals the arising of doubt regarding the past. 'Did I exist or not exist in the past?' is the first doubt concerning whether the self exists or does not exist. If it does not exist, words end there. If one clings to its existence, 'What kind of self did I have?'—was it identical to the aggregates, or apart from the aggregates? Was form the self, or feeling, perception, and so on? This is the second doubt concerning the self's intrinsic nature. If within this one clings to any one of them as the self, 'How did I exist?'—was it permanent or impermanent? Was it male or female, and so on? This is the third doubt concerning the distinctions of the self.
