Regarding "The commentary says: ... meaning one's own, and lower excluding higher": these bodies of the intermediate state can be seen mutually by those of the same class within the five destinies, but in relation to a different destiny, they cannot see each other. If one possesses an extremely pure divine eye attained through cultivation, one can also see intermediate states of different destinies. All inborn eyes cannot see the intermediate state because it is extremely subtle. According to the second master, the higher can also encompass the lower, so the eye of a heavenly intermediate state can see the five destinies. The lower does not reach the higher, so hell-beings see only their own class; therefore it says "one's own, and lower excluding higher." According to Mahāvibhāṣā 70, there are three theories in total. Two theories are identical to this treatise, and there is another theory which says: "Another says: the intermediate state of hell-beings sees the five intermediate states, up to the heavenly intermediate state also seeing the five intermediate states." However, there is no critical evaluation [by the compiler]. Since the verse of this treatise says "they see the same," let us take the first master of this treatise as correct.
