"Because consciousness is the forerunner... because it is so taught": this identifies the substantial nature of name-and-form. Because consciousness is the forerunner, name-and-form subsequently arises in this destiny, complete with the five skandhas. Continuing in unbroken succession throughout an entire lifespan until the end of life, it is collectively called name-and-form. This stage of name-and-form is long, and within this stage the six sense bases and so forth are established. This cites the sūtras as proof. In the Mahānidāna-sūtra, the Pratītyasamutpāda-vibhaṅga-sūtra, and so forth, it is uniformly stated that name-and-form is complete with the five skandhas and extends throughout an entire lifespan.
