[On the passage] 'Some say semen and blood... increases the kaṭasī': the answer. There are two masters; this is the first master. This master's intention says: the great elements of semen and blood immediately become the basis of the faculties. That is, the great elements of semen and blood without faculties in the preceding moment perish together with the intermediate existence, and immediately give rise to the continuation of the great elements possessing faculties in the initial moment of subsequent rebirth-existence. He posits that the great elements that are the basis of the faculties in the initial moment of rebirth-existence take the great elements of semen and blood in the final stage of intermediate existence as homogeneous cause (sabhāga-hetu) and are immediately caused to arise, just as when the seed-cause perishes, the sprout-fruit arises in succession. Because it gathers the great elements of semen and blood to form the basis of the faculties, the initial stage obtains the name kalala. A sūtra says: 'From impurity arises the kalala,' which proves that the great elements of semen and blood immediately become the basis of the faculties. Furthermore, a sūtra says: 'At the time of first taking rebirth, it grasps a drop of blood to form the body,' so we know that the great elements of semen and blood immediately become the basis of the faculties. Kaṭasī: this means craving, and also means the cauldron of blood.
