"The remaining colors are differentiations of these four colors" refers to clouds, smoke, dust, mist, shadow, light, brightness, and darkness. These eight colors, according to what is appropriate, are differentiations of blue, yellow, and so forth. Form caused by the vapor of dragons and so forth is called clouds. That caused by fire is called smoke. Finely dispersed matter is called dust. The vapor of the earth is called mist. That caused by the sun is called light. That caused by jewels, the moon, and so forth is called brightness. That which obstructs light, where brightness arises within it yet other objects can be seen, is called shadow. The opposite of this is called darkness. Although the eight differentiations are distinct, their basis is simply blue and the other colors. There are also distinctions such as bluish-green, pink, purple, and green; these are differences of lightness and darkness, or differences of combination and separation, and are not established separately. Light blue is called bluish-green; pale red is called pink; blue and yellow combined make green; red and black combined make purple.
