The commentary states: "Following the intensity of the object... because of causing continuous succession." This is the answer. If the objects are equally balanced, the gustatory consciousness arises first. Desiring food, it induces the body to successively hold food and put it into the mouth, because one desires to take the flavor with the tongue. If the objects are balanced, one should first perceive the flavor; this is spoken according to the majority of cases. If it is for the sake of knowing cold and warmth, then one should first perceive the tangible. Examining now the sequence of apprehending objects, it is roughly due to four conditions: first, due to differences in attention; second, due to the faculties being sharp or dull; third, due to the objects being strong or weak; fourth, due to the objects being new or old.
