1.24

論「此能破闇故稱冥滅」者，此第二明自利德也。文中有二：初以德屬人、次人所成德。此文初也。此者，此諸所表，佛也。能破闇故稱冥滅者，由佛世尊能破二種無明闇故，故稱冥滅。

As for the treatise saying 'Because he can destroy darkness, it is called dispelling darkness', this is the second part, explaining the virtue of self-benefit. In this text there are two parts: first, attributing the virtue to the person, and second, the virtue accomplished by the person. This passage is the first. 'He' refers to the Buddha indicated by 'whoever'. 'Because he can destroy darkness, it is called dispelling darkness' means: because the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, can destroy the two kinds of darkness of ignorance, it is therefore called dispelling darkness.
