On the commentary text beginning, "The Śāstra says: ... as stated in the *Dharmaskandhapāda*": this explains the root verse; there are the explanations of three masters. This first master says: The Buddha's teaching has eighty thousand sections, and the measure of each section has six thousand stanzas, like the *Dharmaskandha-śāstra*. According to this treatise text, it is precisely the *Dharmaskandha-śāstra* among the six *pāda* treatises; this determines the measure in terms of words and phrases. In Paramārtha's explanation, it is said: "Other masters say: There is one division of the Abhidharma named the dharmaskandha, whose measure is six thousand verses. Among the eighty thousand, the measure of each dharmaskandha is likewise: the Buddha's Abhidharma Piṭaka has nine divisions. The nine divisions are: 1. dharmaskandha, 2. analysis of defilements, 3. analysis of time, 4. analysis of causes, 5. establishment of dhātus, 6. collection of names, 7. attainment, 8. characteristics of karma, 9. characteristics of concentration. Among the nine divisions, one division is called dharmaskandha, containing six thousand verses; the quantity of the other divisions is likewise without exception. Among the eighty thousand dharmaskandhas, each dharmaskandha has six thousand verses; therefore citing the dharmaskandha division among the nine divisions as having six thousand verses constitutes one count among the eighty thousand." Examining this explanation, it differs from the treatise, because the dharmaskandha among the nine divisions is not the *Dharmaskandhapāda*.
