In "The treatise states: ...this obtains the name treasury": third is explaining the verse. In the text there are three [parts]: 1. setting forth the tatpuruṣa explanation; 2. setting forth the bahuvrīhi explanation; 3. concluding the name of the treasury. This passage is the first. The Nyāyānusāra states: "This is explained according to tatpuruṣa and bahuvrīhi. Kośa means solid and core, like the core of a tree (garbha/sāra). All the solid and core meanings in the Abhidharma treatises enter and are subsumed within this; because it is their treasury/core, it is called the Abhidharmakośa." According to this treatise text, the Western regions explain "kośa" with two meanings: 1. the meaning of solidity/core, like the core of a tree, meaning the heart of a tree is solid and called its core. This is an analogy for the ultimate meaning in the Abhidharma treatises being solid; this ultimate meaning is named the Abhidharmakośa. Just as one takes the core of a tree and further fashions various vessels, these vessels are called the core of the tree, because they are the core of the tree. By analogy, taking the core of ultimate meaning from within the Abhidharmakośa to compose this treatise, this treatise is also called the Abhidharmakośa. That is, it is the ultimate meaning of the Abhidharmakośa.
