On the text of the treatise: "What dharma is called ... to speak of the Abhidharma?": all the explanations above concerning the name and essence of the treatise and the persons who spoke it served to introduce and explain the root verses. From here down is the second major division, clarifying the main body of the text, which consists of six hundred verses. Therein, the "Chapter on the Elements" (Dhātunirdeśa) contains forty-four verses. The first twenty-five verses generally explain contaminated (sāsrava) and uncontaminated (anāsrava) dharmas, while the remaining nineteen verses differentiate them through various categories. Within the twenty-five verses, the first three verses divide all dharmas into contaminated and uncontaminated; the next twenty-two verses divide them into the five aggregates (skandhas), the twelve sense bases (āyatanas), and so forth. In the first part there are three sections: 1. the summary and introduction prior to the verse; 2. citing the verse in reply; 3. the prose commentary. This introduces the question; all subsequent sections follow the same structure and need not be elaborated further.
