The treatise states: "... it is spoken of as ignorance." This explains the verse text. Within this there are three parts: first, proving it is not different from or the absence of clarity; second, proving it is not subsumed under bad discernment; third, proving it is not discernment other than views. This is the first part. Since ignorance is one fetter among the nine fetters, one bond among the three bonds, subsumed under one latent bias among the ten latent biases, one defiling outflow among the three defiling outflows, and one yoke and one torrent among the four yokes and four torrents, we know it is not other phenomena like the eye that are merely different from clarity, nor is it entirely non-existent like a rabbit's horns. Because it can be spoken of as an item such as a fetter, there is a distinct dharma that is spoken of as ignorance.
