The treatise says: "1. Arbuda... to Mahāpadma." "Arbuda" is translated here as "blister"; the severe cold presses upon the body, producing blisters. "Nirarbuda" is translated here as "bursting blister"; the severe cold exceeds that of the previous one, and the bodily blisters burst. The above two derive their names from bodily blisters and bursting blisters. "Aṭaṭa" is the sound of enduring the cold; because the cold intensifies, the mouth cannot be opened, and they can only move the tongue to make the sound "aṭaṭa". As for "Hahava", because the cold intensifies further, the tongue cannot be moved, and they can only make the sound "hahava". As for "Huhuva", because the cold intensifies, they cannot open the mouth, and they can only make the sound "huhuva". "Utpala" is translated here as "blue lotus"; because the cold intensifies further, the bodily color turns blue, like a blue lotus. "Padma" is translated here as "red lotus"; because the cold intensifies, their bodies split open, like a red lotus. "Mahāpadma" is translated here as "great red lotus"; because the cold intensifies further, their bodies split open, like a great red lotus. The above lists the names.
