The treatise says: "For what reason do the lower three dhyānas... suffer these external disasters?" This explains the disasters of the lower dhyānas and their reasons. The Nyāyānusāra says: "In the second dhyāna, the feeling of joy (prīti) is an internal disaster; accompanied by pliancy (praśrabdhi), it is moist like water, and therefore coarse heaviness (dauṣṭhulya) throughout the entire body is completely eliminated by it. Therefore, the sūtra states that the faculty of suffering ceases in the second dhyāna, up to: it is also due to the cessation of the consciousness-aggregates that support suffering that the faculty of suffering is said to cease in the second dhyāna. Although when born in a higher stage the consciousness-aggregates can appear present, they do not operate according to desire; because there is mastery, there is no fault. However, the sūtra says that suffering ceases, relying on the time of properly entering absorption. In the first dhyāna there are still vitarka and vicāra, and there is no predominant joy; it is not said that suffering ceases." It also says: "Therefore, the first dhyāna internally possesses the three disasters, and externally it also fully suffers destruction by the three disasters. The second dhyāna internally possesses two disasters, hence externally it also suffers destruction by two disasters. The third dhyāna internally possesses only one disaster, hence externally it suffers destruction by only one disaster (the coarse heaviness of the body is the root of suffering; the pliancy of the second dhyāna can eliminate it, hence it is said that the faculty of suffering ceases)."
