On the Śāstra's text, "Due to the last one turbidity... and freedom from disease": Explaining that because of the turbidity of sentient beings, wisdom, mindfulness, and so forth are all degraded. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 113, says: "The degradation of sentient beings means that at the beginning of the kalpa, this continent of Jambudvīpa was vast, pure, and adorned, with many gentle, wholesome, and meritorious sentient beings, cities and towns contiguous, and people filling them. When it reaches the end of the kalpa, only ten thousand people remain." According to the Vibhāṣā, the degradation of sentient beings has two aspects: first, making them degraded and bad; second, making them few in number. Badness is the meaning of turbidity; fewness in number is not the meaning of turbidity. Just as with turbid water or turbid wine, they are not named turbid because of being little, but rather named turbid because of the sediment and defilement settling at the bottom. Since this treatise explains the turbidity of sentient beings, it omits discussing fewness.
