15.12

「論曰至支因說不定」，總釋有情必同支，因不定。八種律儀必普緣一切有情處發，支即不定，或四、或七，因或上、中、下等。

On "The Śāstra says: ...the branches and causes are stated to be variable", this generally explains that sentient beings must be uniform, while branches and causes are variable. The eight kinds of discipline must arise universally directed toward the bases of all sentient beings; their branches, however, are variable, being either four or seven, and their causes are either superior, middling, or inferior, and so on.
