On the Śāstra's: "That the causes are variable... is spoken with respect to the latter three causes", this explains that the causes are variable. Causes are of two kinds: first, the three causes of non-attachment, non-ill-will, and non-delusion; second, the three causes of superior, middling, and inferior. If it is the three causes such as non-attachment, when explaining their distinction in terms of essence, the discipline generated by the three causes differs. If explaining the discipline in terms of the person, there is no one who abides in discipline who does not generate discipline from all three causes, because they necessarily arise together. If it is the superior, middling, and inferior causes, there is no one who abides in discipline who generates a single discipline from all three causes, because superior, middling, and inferior minds do not arise simultaneously. If considered in terms of distinct disciplines and distinct times, it is indeed possible. When the verse says 'the branches and causes are variable', it is spoken with respect to the superior, middling, and inferior causes.
