15.72

論「若爾何緣至立他勝名」，經部難也。本以有戒名苾芻、名沙門、名釋迦子。戒是苾芻體、沙門性，既佛言非苾芻等，壞滅墮落，立他勝名。犯四重禁既名他勝，如何得有成苾芻戒？

On the text "If so, for what reason … establish the name 'defeat'?": the Sautrāntika objects. Originally, because one possessed the precepts, one was called a bhikṣu, called a śramaṇa, called a son of the Śākyas. The precepts are the substance of a bhikṣu, the nature of a śramaṇa. Since the Buddha said that [such a person] is not a bhikṣu and so forth, being destroyed and ruined, fallen, and established the name "defeat" (pārājika)—since committing the four grave prohibitions is named "defeat," how could one possess the precepts that constitute a bhikṣu?
