On the text, "The treatise says [...] they are inferred from the two karmas": This explains the reason for establishing the three silences. *Muni* (牟尼) is translated here as "silence" (寂默). The bodily and vocal karma of the non-learner (aśaikṣa) are called bodily and vocal silence. Mental silence is the non-learner mind, not mental karma. Because true silence is solely the mind, and bodily and vocal karmas are inferred from the mind, that which infers and that which is inferred are collectively called silence. The *Nyāyānusāra* says: "Because bodily and vocal karma are separated from all evils, they can be inferred. Since mental karma has no function of being that which infers among them, how could only that which can infer and that which is inferred together be established as silence?"
