18.10

論「如是僧破至是無間果」，答。如是無覆無記僧破，因妄語生。妄語是無間罪，僧破之因。僧破不和合性，是妄語無間之果。果雖無記，因是不善，故成無間。

[On] the treatise's [statement], "Such schism in the Saṅgha ... is the result of [an offense of] immediate retribution": An answer. Such non-obscured and neutral schism in the Saṅgha arises from false speech. False speech is an offense of immediate retribution and the cause of the schism in the Saṅgha. The non-concordant nature of schism in the Saṅgha is the result of that immediate retribution of false speech. Although the result is neutral, the cause is unwholesome, and therefore it constitutes [an offense of] immediate retribution.
