18.6

論「因受果名或能破故」，答。因虛誑語彼僧破故。誑語是因，僧破是果，因取果名名為破僧。或能破者，以虛誑語有其力用能破僧故，名破僧也。從用為名，名為破僧。

On the Śāstra's statement, 'Because the cause takes the name of the effect, or because it is capable of splitting': This is the answer. Because of the false speech, that Saṃgha is split. False speech is the cause and the schism of the Saṃgha is the fruit; the cause takes the name of the fruit, so it is called 'causing a schism in the Saṃgha.' Alternatively, 'capable of splitting' means that because false speech has the functional capacity to split the Saṃgha, it is called causing a schism in the Saṃgha. Named after its function, it is called 'causing a schism in the Saṃgha.'
