The Śāstra states: "Former masters... is unwholesome in nature." This recounts the Sautrāntika explanation. For the Sautrāntikas, the view of self encompasses both conceptually arisen (vikalpita) and innate (sahaja); animals and the like have no conceptualization. The conceptually arisen one is unwholesome, and the innate one is indeterminate, which is the same as the Mahāyāna. In the Sarvāstivāda school, the view of self is solely conceptually arisen and not innate. That which is devoid of conceptualization, as in animals and the like, grasping at self and other, is non-defiled ignorance (akliṣṭāvidyā), not the view of self.
