On the Śāstra's statement: "Furthermore, when one opens one eye [...] both eyes see together": the author of the Śāstra himself explains seeing with two eyes. One group of masters says: It is merely the mental consciousness induced by the touched eye that falsely deems two to be seen, and that second moon is not seen by the touched eye. This is not so. Both eyes see one moon together; because the sense-faculty is displaced, the locations seen are not the same, and because of this the mental consciousness deems there to be two moons. If one claims that opening one and pressing one makes one see two moons, and that this is not the two eyes each seeing one moon, why does closing one and pressing one not make one see two moons? This is just as when the two eyes are opened alternately, though they see the same object, the object's location differs. Furthermore, if one claims that the second moon is not seen by the touched eye, on what grounds would the author of the Śāstra prove that two eyes see—that although it is the same object, the seeing of the two eyes is different, inducing the arising of mental consciousness to deem there to be two moons? Furthermore, if the two moons were not seen by each eye individually, why is it that when the touched eye is obstructed, the second moon disappears while the first moon remains, and when the untouched eye is obstructed, the first moon disappears while the second moon remains? Furthermore, if because the moon seen by the touched eye is displaced, one immediately claims that the second moon is cognised only by mental consciousness, then if both eyes were displaced and pressed at the same time, the moons seen would all be displaced—could it be that neither eye sees a moon? If you claim they do not see, after which consciousness is mental consciousness induced to arise and deem there to be two moons? The remaining text is easy to understand.
