From the commentary's 'It says: [...]' up to 'they are broadly of the nature of a basis', this explains whether the bases are simultaneous or non-simultaneous. Mental consciousness relies exclusively on the immediately ceased mind, whereas the five consciousnesses broadly rely on both the simultaneous supporting faculty and the sequentially ceased mind: the sequentially ceased mind is the past basis, and the simultaneous physical faculty is the present basis. Furthermore, the sequentially ceased mind is the general basis, and the simultaneous supporting faculty is the specific basis. The Sautrāntika masters say that the five consciousnesses also take past objects as their conditions, as refuted in the eighth fascicle of the Nyāyānusāra.
