On the Śāstra's: "One should say that these four are either different or identical": The general answer. Now examining this: if the three dharmas are in the same plane as the body, they are called "identical"; if they are not in the same plane as the body, they are called "different." Therefore the Nyāyānusāra states: "What is called 'identical' means that one born in the desire realm sees visual forms of one's own plane with an eye of one's own plane; all four are of the identical plane. One born in the first dhyāna sees visual forms of one's own plane with an eye of one's own plane; all are likewise of the identical plane. What is called 'different' (and so forth). The remaining permutations are to be inferred from this. When the four dharmas across two planes belong to the same plane, they are called 'identical'; all the other permutations are 'different.' For a body born in the desire realm, there is one identical permutation, and the remaining permutations are all different. For one born in the first dhyāna, there is one identical permutation, and the remaining permutations are all different. In the second, third, and fourth dhyānas, there are only different permutations and no identical permutation, because in the higher planes the five consciousnesses do not exist; the ear is likewise. The two—nose and tongue—have only identical permutations and no different permutations, because their two objects and two consciousnesses belong solely to the desire realm, and while the higher planes have the faculties, they lack the supports for consciousness, and a body in a lower plane cannot possess higher faculties. As for the body faculty, if born in the desire realm or the first dhyāna, there are only identical permutations; if born in the higher three planes, there are only distinct permutations. As for the mental faculty, if it is a body of the four skandhas, no matter which plane one is born in, there are both identical and different permutations; if initially considered with respect to the physical body, it exists only in the five planes. Discriminating their identity and difference should be contemplated in accordance with reason." The statement "Up to the other realms, they should also be distinguished in this way" indicates the principle to explain it.
